A player recently suspended from minor league baseball for a drug violation has landed a spot in the American Association.

Infielder C.J. Retherford has signed with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks just days after receiving a 50 game suspension for violating the minor league baseball drug prevention and treatment program.

Retherford tested positive for an amphetamine and that led to his suspension from the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.  He had been playing with AA Chattanooga.

This week, Retherford he tested positive for Adderall, which is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He told the Fargo InForum he took the drug to help with his focus, but didn’t have a therapeutic use exemption, which would have made it OK for him to use it.

Now I’m going to go to the doctor and get it checked out and see what happens.

If it turns out that I need it, now it doesn’t look so bad.

The suspension doesn't extend to the American Association, which is an independent league and not bound by the terms of the punishment.

This is Retherford's second stint in Fargo.  He played for the RedHawks in 2011, batting .339 with 24 doubles, four home runs and 37 RBIs in 56 games.

The Canaries aren't scheduled to the RedHawks again until July 15-17.
