Augustana Shoots Its Way Past USF 96-77
SIOUX FALLS, SD — Augustana shot a season-high 55.5 percent from the field and 61 percent from 3-point range on its way to a 96-77 win over Sioux Falls (5-2, 2-1 NSIC) on Saturday night at the Stewart Center. Casey Schilling recorded his second double-double of the season finishing with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Vikings (5-4, 2-1 NSIC).
Augustana hit 11 3-pointers in the win, marking its third straight game with 10 or more in the contest. Daniel Jansen was a perfect 3 for 3 from 3-point range and finished with 19 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Jansen was also 4 of 4 from the free throw line.
Freshman guard Matthew Brazendale posted the second 20-point performance of his career, finishing with 20 on 7 of 14 shooting. Augustana shot 83 percent from the free throw line hitting 29 of 35 shots from the stripe. Schilling led the Vikings at the line with a career-high 10 made free throws on 12 attempts.
Adam Beyer added a season-high nine points for Augustana making one field goal and going 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Ethan Guske pitched in eight points hitting 2 of 3 from 3-point range.
After USF started off the game with a quick 3-pointer from the right corner, the Vikings went on a12-3 run to grab a big lead. The Cougars stopped the bleeding getting baskets on consecutive possessions but Jansen and Brazendale answered with two straight 3-pointers to put the Vikings up 19-9.
Augustana hit 7 of its first 8 shots, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range in the first five and a half minutes of the game to take a 21-9 lead at the game’s first media timeout.
The Cougars went on a 17-4 run over the four and a half minutes, hitting three 3-pointers during the stretch, taking a 26-25 lead with 10:11 to play in the first half. Augustana stormed right back scoring 14 of the game’s next 18 points to take a 39-30 lead.
USF followed suit and scored eight straight points on three straight possessions, on two more 3-pointers by Johnson to make it a 39-37 game. That did not get the Vikings down as they scored 12 of the game’s next 16 points to go up 51-41 with 1:32 to go in the half.
Augustana took a 51-45 halftime lead after shooting 65 percent (19 of 29) from the field in the first half, including 7 of 10 from 3-point range. The Vikings were led by Schilling’s 13 first-half points with Matthew Brazendale and Jansen each adding nine points.
USF got 14 points from Johnson in the first half as he was 5 of 7 from the field, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range. The Cougars finished the half shooting 50 percent (17 of 34) from the field, 6 of 13 from 3-point range.
The Vikings pushed the lead to 10 at 55-45 a minute and a half into the second half but USF went on a 10-3 run over the next two minutes to make it a three point game at 58-55 in favor of the Vikings. That is as close as Augustana would allow the Cougars to get as the Vikings were able to push the lead back up to 10 at 72-62 with 9:31 remaining in the game. Brazendale scored five points during that stretch and seven over a minute span and the Vikings and the Vikings continued to add to their lead.
Schilling gave the Vikings its largest lead of the night at 15 hitting his second 3-pointer of the night making the score 81-66 with 6:50 remaining in the game. The Vikings continued to overwhelm the Cougars pushing their lead to 20 at 91-71 after a putback by Devin Gilligan.
