One of the top stars of NASCAR makes a surprising move saying he wants to be done as a driver. Carl Edwards came out with the breaking news in racing on Tuesday morning.

Edwards says that he is going to pursue other interests outside of driving race cars. He will be leaving Joe Gibbs Racing.

We are getting reports from multiple sources including FOX Sports and ESPN that reigning Xfinity Series champ Daniel Saurez will take over his Cup ride with Joe Gibbs Racing.

Edwards won 28 races in his career, but never a championship. However he came awful close a couple times.

In 2011 he tied for the title with Tony Stewart, where Stewart won the tie breaker with the most event wins. In 2008 Edwards was on his way to claiming the title, but crashed late in the race at Talladega, ending his hopes and seeing Jimmie Johnson take the championship.

And in the final race of last season, Edwards was in position to win the championship, but crashed late in the race with Joey Logano.

This news was definitely shocking with Daytona and the start of the 2017 season just weeks away. What will Edwards attribute his decision to?

Time will tell. I speculate the answer to be, spending his life with his family. We will see.
