Chicago Blackhawks End Skid, Anaheim Ducks Stay Hot

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks put together a three-goal second period to avoid their first four-game losing streak of the season.

Marian Hossa scored the go-ahead goal and had an assist as the Hawks downed Edmonton 5-3. Jonathan Toews provided the eventual game-winner and Patrick Kane had two assists to help the Blackhawks complete a sweep of the three-game season series.

The Hawks still trail the Western Conference-leading Anaheim Ducks by five points. The Ducks won for the 17th time in 18 games as Andrew Cogliano scored the lone goal in a 1-0 shutout of Detroit. Jonas Hiller made 20 shots for his third shutout of the season and 19th of his career.

— The New York Islanders picked up their seventh straight road win as John Tavares notched the tiebreaking goal with 1:24 left to lead a 4-2 win over Dallas. Kyle Okposo scored back-to-back goals after the Stars took a 2-0 lead.

— Daniel Carcillo, Rick Nash and Derick Brassard scored less than 10 minutes into the game to spark the New York Rangers' third straight win, 4-1 over Philadelphia. Henrik Lundqvist handled 37 shots in the Rangers' seventh consecutive home win against the Flyers.

— Toronto had dropped four straight until James van Riemsdyk scored a power-play goal in regulation before netting the lone shootout tally in the Maple Leafs' 3-2 verdict over New Jersey. Tyler Bozak scored the Leafs' first goal to run his point streak to 11 games.

— Minnesota blanked Nashville 4-0 as Darcy Kuemper (KEM'-pur) stopped 23 shots for his first career shutout. Dany Heatley furnished a goal and an assist in the Wild's fifth victory in six games.

— The Sabres had dropped 11 straight road games until Cody Hodgson scored the lone shootout goal to give Buffalo a 2-1 victory in Washington. The Sabres avoided matching the longest road losing streak in franchise history, set two seasons ago.

— Claude Noel has been fired as coach by the Winnipeg Jets and replaced with Paul Maurice. The Jets have lost five straight and are 19-23-5 on the season, 10 points out of the final playoff berth in the Western Conference. Noel went 80-79-18 with the Jets after being hired right after the franchise moved from Atlanta before the 2011-12 season. Maurice had two runs as head coach of the Carolina Panthers in between a two-year stint behind the Toronto bench.
