Kansas City police have confirmed that Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher committed suicide at the practice facility after killing his girlfriend Saturday morning.

The altercation began and occurred in the early hours on Saturday morning in a Kansas City, Mo., neighborhood while the suicide happened around 8 a.m.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Kansas City Chiefs front office said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

Jovan Belcher was undrafted in 2009 after attending the University of Maine and made his debut for the Chiefs that same year and was in his 4th year of duty in the NFL.

The Chiefs are hosting the Carolina Panthers at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday. The Charlotte Observer is reporting that the NFL has advised the Panthers to travel as planned.
