SCOTLAND - A South Dakota man sentenced to life in prison for causing the death of his infant son plans to appeal his conviction on second-degree murder and aggravated assault convictions.

The Daily Republic newspaper reports that the attorney for 39-year-old Chris Miller, of the town of Scotland, has notified the state Supreme Court of his intentions. Court documents containing arguments for the appeal likely will be due next month.

A Turner County jury on Jan. 30 convicted Miller in the March 2011 death of 4-month-old Jacob Miller, who authorities said suffered a severe skull fracture and bleeding on the brain.
