Clarin Posts Double-Double, Jacks Defeat Green Bay
GREEN BAY, Wis. – Junior Mariah Clarin posted her second double-double of the season as the South Dakota State women’s basketball team (6-4) defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay (6-1), 66-54, Saturday afternoon in front of 1,785 fans in the Kress Center.
The SDSU win snapped a two-game road losing streak for the Jacks, and was Green Bay’s third home loss in the last five years. The Phoenix’s last home loss was Feb. 9, 2012, vs. Detroit.
Clarin (Princeton, Minn.) led three Jackrabbits in double figures with a team-high 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Senior Tara Heiser (Watertown) added 13 points off the bench and classmate Steph Paluch (Pierre) finished with 10 points.
After being tied 27-27 at halftime, South Dakota State used a 7-0 run to open the second half and take a, 34-30 lead with 17:55 left. The Phoenix cut the lead to three points, 39-36, after Kaili Lukan made back-to-back layups with 13:40 remaining.
The Jackrabbits continued to stay ahead by two-or-more points until late in the half when freshman Kerri Young (Mitchell) and junior Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes) hit back-to-back jumpers for a five-point lead with 6:07 left. After a layup from Megan Lukan, Heiser hit her second three-pointer of the game to push the Jacks’ lead to 59-51 with 4:13 remaining.
The Phoenix sent the Jackrabbits to the free-throw line five times the last 1:06 and they sank seven of eight free throws for the win.
In the first half, Wisconsin-Green Bay opened the game with a 12-3 run with Breannah Ranger scoring eight of her 10 first-half points. SDSU fought back with a 7-0 run to tie the score at 14 with 8:32 left. The Phoenix took the lead 25-17 with 4:43 remaining, but the Jackrabbits ended the half on a 10-4 run for the tie. Paluch scored five of her 10 points during the run.
Wisconsin-Green Bay was led by Kaili Lukan with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ranger finished with 12 points and Megan Lukan with 10 points.
South Dakota State shot 43.9 percent from the field and controlled the boards with 44 rebounds to Phoenix’s 33. The Jacks also had 12 offensive boards, led by Clarin’s six.
The Jackrabbits return to the friendly confines of Frost Arena Dec. 11 when they host nationally-ranked Penn State at 7 p.m.
