Cougars shutout at SMSU

MARSHALL, MN -- The University of Sioux Falls women’s soccer team suffered its third defeat of the season, falling 3-0 on the road to Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night in Marshall, Minn.

The loss dropped USF’s record to 0-3 (0-1, NSIC) while SMSU improved to 3-0 (1-0, NSIC).

The homestanding Mustangs pushed early and were rewarded with a goal by Kendahl Fisher to take a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

The Cougars fell prey to a set piece early in the second half, as SMSU extended the lead to 2-0 when Lauren Douglas converted a corner kick by Megan Kilroy in the 51st minute.

SMSU took advantage of a USF foul at the top of the box to create the final margin. Playing a physical style of defense, USF, which was whistled for nine fouls on the night, was called for the penalty just inside the 18. The whistle allowed Autumn Hayes to take a penalty kick, the first allowed by USF this season, which she buried for her first goal of the season.

USF was held to four shots on the night and could only force Mustang netminder Sonya Smith into two saves.

USF surrendered 19 shots, and all but 16 were put on frame as Cougar keeper Corrin Cook surrendered three goals and made a career-high 13 saves.

USF returns home for a non-conference tilt against Truman State on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
