Coyotes Slug Four HRs, Score 17 Runs In Split At Iowa State

 

AMES, Iowa — South Dakota pounded four home runs and scored 17 runs, but settled for a split of a doubleheader with Iowa State Tuesday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones rallied late to earn a 6-5 win in extra innings in game one. South Dakota took the nightcap 12-3.

Coyote first baseman Matley Jones was 4-for-4 in the opener and finished with six hits during the twin bill including three doubles. Center fielder Katie Dinning was 5-for-9 with a double and a triple. Catcher Allie Daly hit her eighth home run of the season and was 4-for-8 on the day with four runs scored.

South Dakota (25-17) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one off Cyclones ace Katie Johnson, who was making her first appearance following two weeks out with an illness. Katie Cochran had an RBI single and Kassie Loe hit a two-run homer to help USD build its lead. Johnson was replaced in the fourth inning after surrendering eight hits in 16 at bats.

USD starter Rachel Cue took a batted ball to the side of the chin to start the fourth inning. She stayed in the game and issued a four-pitch walk to Jorden Spendlove before being replaced. Cue is expected to be ready for her next start.

With Cue out, the Cyclones’ plated two runs in the fifth and got a game-tying two-run homer by catcher Rachel Hartman in the bottom of the seventh. Iowa State (21-23) won it in the eighth with a two-out, RBI single by shortstop Lexi Slater that scored Maddie Reese.

South Dakota scored three runs in the fourth inning of game two, got a two-run homer by Morgan Hancock in the fifth and got a two-run double by Hancock as part of a four-run sixth inning. First baseman Yvon Minogue capped the scoring with a three-run homer in the seventh, her second of the year.

Freshman pitcher Kayla Fields (2-1) earned her third start of the season and picked up her second win. She pitched all seven innings, allowing 11 hits and striking out two with one walk. She surrendered one earned run and retired seven of the final nine batters she faced.

The series with Iowa State marked the final non-conference games of the regular season for South Dakota. The Coyotes return to the field Friday for a doubleheader against South Dakota State in Brookings.
