Denver Rally Upends USD In Summit Semis
INDIANAPOLIS — Second-seeded Denver overcame a two set deficit and had five players reach at least 10 kills to end the South Dakota volleyball team’s season 26-28, 12-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-12 in the Summit League Tournament semifinals at the IUPUI Gymnasium on Saturday night.
Sarah Schmid and Moni Corrujedo both recorded 17 kills to lead the Pioneers (17-11, 10-4), while Brea Muhle had 16 kills, Nola Basey had 12 kills and Cassie Ronda had 10 kills. Basey and Kate Acker both led Denver in digs with 15 and Tori Moons added 61 assists.
Denver outkilled USD 44-33 over the final three sets while recording a hitting percentage of .317. USD had a hitting percentage of .229 during that time. The teams had the same amount of attack errors (11) over the last three sets.
USD (19-13, 9-5), the third seed in the tournament, was led by Kendall Kritenbrink’s 23 kills and three aces, while Tori Kroll and Audrey Reeg both recorded double-doubles. Kroll had 55 assists and 12 digs while Reeg had 16 kills and 11 digs. Melissa Firtko added 10 kills, while Riley Haug and Kaitlyn Hastings led USD defensively with 16 digs.
USD won a battle of a first set that had 16 ties and seven lead changes and never trailed in the second set. The Coyotes recorded 19 kills in the first set and had only one attack error in the second.
Denver never trailed after the third set and recorded 17 kills in both the third and fourth sets. The Pioneers also clamped down defensively, allowing 10 kills in the fourth set and eight kills in the fifth set.
The match was the last match for USD’s three seniors: Tori Kroll, Natalie Walseth and Amber Aschoff.
