Early Goal Proves Too Much For Vikings In 1-0 Loss
SIOUX FALLS, SD -- Augustana soccer surrendered an early goal and couldn't respond falling 1-0 to St. Cloud State Sunday afternoon. The Vikings are now 4-4-2, 3-2-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action and the Huskies improve to 5-4-1 overall, 4-3 in NSIC play.
St. Cloud State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Off of a throw-in, Laura Moline corralled the ball and crossed it to a wide open Mary Morhardt who beat Amanda Wagner in the lower left corner of the goal.
Augustana out-shot the Huskies 5-3 in the first, but only managed two on goal and St. Cloud State connected on their only shot on goal in the first stanza.
The Vikings amped up their offense, but couldn't get on the scoreboard and Morhardt's goal proved to be the game-winner. Augsutana once again out-shot the Huskies in the second half, 9-3, but only two of those were on frame.
Kirsten Smith had a header off of a corner kick which hit the post in the 72nd minute and Annie Thoresen's shot seven minutes later was denied by the SCSU keeper as the Vikings tried to feverishly attack in the closing minutes of the game.
Smith's three shots were a high for the offense and Kara Bartels, Sheila Gorgan, and Maren Werth each contributed two shots as well.
The Vikings head back out on the road next weekend beginning with Minnesota State on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.
