Former Coyote Coach Joey James Returns To Division II Roots
A month after being let go by the University of South Dakota, Joey James has another head coaching job, at Division II Concordia – St. Paul in the Northern Sun Conference.
James, a long time USD assistant and interim head coach last season, is the ninth head coach in school history. He inherits a program that went 8-19 last season, 5-17 in NSIC play.
In a Concordia – St. Paul press release, James said:
I am very excited about the opportunity to lead the men’s basketball program at Concordia University.
I would like to thank (Concordia athletic director) Tom (Rubbelke) and the search committee for believing in me and having the confidence in me as their men’s basketball coach.
My staff and I will work extremely hard to make Concordia a program that competes every night in the highly competitive NSIC.
I’m eager to get started and look forward to the challenges of building a championship caliber program on and off the court.
As part of the Northern Sun Conference, James will return to South Dakota at least twice a year to play at Augustana and the University of Sioux Falls. The final three rounds of the conference tournament are also in Sioux Falls, at the Sanford Pentagon in March.
The move is a return to Division II for James, who played D2 basketball at USD and became a member of then head coach Dave Boots’ staff when the Coyotes were still a Division II program.
