Blake Treinen’s stint as the new closer for the Washington Nationals didn’t last long. The former South Dakota State pitcher has lost the job after just eight appearances in 2017.

After tossing a perfect ninth inning, and earning his first save of the season, on opening day against Miami, Treinen has given up five earned runs and 12 hits in his last seven appearances. He’s also walked five in his last four innings, including two during the ninth inning of Tuesday’s (April 18) game at Atlanta. Treinen’s ERA currently sits at 7.11.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker says Treinen will return to the set-up role that saw him post an ERA of 3.05 over the past three seasons. Baker says Shawn Kelley and Koda Glover will now share the closer role.

Treinen, a native of Osage City, Kansas, pitched for SDSU in 2010 and 2011. During his senior year, he went 7-3 with an ERA of 3.00.
