GreatLIFE Lift For a Cause Powerlifting Meet Coming in June
GreatLIFE Fitness in Sioux Falls is hosting the first annual Lift For a Cause powerlifting meet to raise funds for the Special Olympics of South Dakota. Local lifters are invited to compete in the meet, which will also feature a Special Olympics powerlifting team.
GreatLIFE trainer Chris Arbach is the organizer of the event. Arbach says he and his collages had been discussing idea of a powerlifitng meet for awhile. "I decided it shouldn't be just an idea anymore and decided I was going to take the lead on it," he said.
Arbach adds, "I've always wanted to get involved with the Special Olympics and when we started tossing the idea around I instantly knew it was something I wanted to be a part of."
Powerlifting is a different than weightlifting when it comes to competition. In weightlifting the person attempts to lift the weight over their head. Powerlifting is about lifting as much weight as possible over three attempts in different three lifts: the deadlift, squat and bench press.
Arbach says about powerlifitng, "There's something about moving a crushing amount of weight, and the satisfaction that comes with it. And you get to see these athletes do it with a smile on their face."
The deadlift is when the person, in a standing position, squats down and attempts to lift a loaded barbell to their hips.
The squat in powerlifting is when the weighted barbell is held on the shoulders behind the head and the person bends at the knees and returns to a standing position.
Bench press, is the classic strength training exercise where the athlete lays on their back on a bench and lifts as much as they can with a barbell, moving the weight from their chest back up, like a reverse push-up.
Registration for athletes is open now. The organizers are also looking for volunteers to help with the meet. Entry forms are available at the GreatLIFE locations at 26th and Village Square, 39th and Phillips, 10th and Mable, and Willow Run.
