Hot Shooting Helps Augustana To Big Win Over Presentation

SIOUX FALLS, SD — Augustana men’s basketball shot 57 percent from the field, including 13 of 26 from 3-point range on its way to a 104-55 win over Presentation College on Wednesday night in Sioux Falls. The 104 points scored by Augustana is the most since Jan. 7, 2012 when the Vikings defeated Bemidji state 109-93 in double overtime.

Augustana improves to 1-2 on the season while tonight’s game was an exhibition contest for Presentation. The 49-point margin of victory for Augustana is the largest since a 103-51 (52 points) against Dakota State on Dec. 9, 2008.

Augustana has scored 100 or more points against Presentation in three out of four all-time meetings. The 13 3-point field goals by Augustana is the most since hitting 11 against Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 27, 2013.

The Vikings were led by Casey Schilling who scored 19 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Daniel Jansen added 17 points and four rebounds while Ethan Guske put up a season-high 14 points and three steals.

Guske finished the game hitting 5 of 7 shots from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Jamall Taylor also hit double-digits for Augustana finishing with 10 points while dishing out three assists.

Augustana finished the game with 40 points in the paint and 32 points off turnovers. Presentation turned the ball over 21 times in the game while the Vikings limited themselves to just six.

Presentation was led by Gregory Garrett who scored 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Terry Strong added 11 points for the Saints, hitting 3 of 4 shots from 3-point range.

Holding an 8-4 lead a minute and a half into the game, Augustana went on a 16-0 run over the next three minutes to go up by 18 points at 22-4. Schilling scored the game’s first points on a 3-pointer from the right corner and went on to score five more over Augustana’s run.

Presentation finally stopped the bleeding with back-to-back 3-pointers after almost six minutes of play without a basket. The Saints hit two of its next four shots from 3-point range to get within 10 points at 26-16. Garrett hit two of the four 3-pointers for the Saints.

Guske went on a quick tear for the Vikings hitting two 3-pointers and scoring eight straight points to push Augustana’s lead to 34-18 with 7:27 left in the first half. Augustana went on an 11-0 run over the final 2:40 of the first half to take a 52-27 halftime lead.

The Vikings shot 60 percent (18 of 30) from the field in the first half, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range. Guske finished the first half with 11 points shooting 4 of 4 from the field, hitting 3 of 3 shots from 3-point range.

Schilling led all players with 14 points in the first half, hitting 4 of 6 shots from the field, including two 3-pointers. Schilling was also 4 of 5 from 3-point range where the Vikings shot 68 percent in the half.

Augustana used its size to its advantage in the first half out-scoring Presentation 22-6 in the paint. The Vikings forced 12 Presentation turnovers, leading to 19 points while turning the ball over just four times.

Presentation shot 33 percent (9 of 27) from the field in the first half, but was 6 of 14 (43 percent) from 3-point range. Garrett led the Saints with 10 first-half points, going 4 of 7 from the field, including 2 of 2 from behind the arc. Strong added nine points for Presentation hitting 3 of 3 buckets from 3-point range.

The Vikings opened up a 30-point lead just under five minutes into the second half after Guske and Evan Pierce each nailed a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions giving Augustana a 62-32 lead.

Augustana continued to pour it on in the second half, leading by as much as 52 points and hitting triple digits for the first time in two seasons.

The Vikings return to the court this Saturday, hosting Dakota State with tip-off set for 7 p.m. at the Elmen Center.
