It's no surprise that South Dakota doesn't get a lot of respect from the rest of the country, especially when it comes to sports.

So it wasn't much of a shock to see Josh Levin at Slate.com 'saddle' South Dakota with rodeo when he compiled a United Sports of America map, limiting each state to just one sport.

Levin's take:

South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming have all chosen rodeo as an official sport.

Which state deserves to lasso the rodeo crown?

I have no idea.

What I do know is that there are absolutely no other options for South Dakota.

So congratulations, people of Sioux Falls and Pierre—you are the winners by default.

Yee-haw!

Upon closer inspection though it actually makes sense.

As he points out, rodeo is the official sport of South Dakota.

Also, keep in mind, there are no duplicates on this list - 50 different sports for 50 different states.

That means while the Rushmore State got rodeo, other states weren't so fortunate.

Would you rather be Connecticut?  They got squash.

Delaware? Pumpkin chunking (whatever that is).

Washington D.C.? Kickball.

Surely a power player like New York got football or baseball right?  Nope.  The Empire State can lay claim to streetball as its sport.

Then there's poor Ohio.  The home of the Buckeyes and the Big Red Machine will now be known as the cornhole capital of America.

All of the sudden rodeo doesn't sound so bad.

Thanks Josh!
