Iowa Rallies To Beat Jacks 2-1 In Extra Innings

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Taylor Zeutenhorst singled home the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving Iowa a 2-1 victory over South Dakota State in the opening game of a three-game weekend baseball series Friday night at Duane Banks Field.

The Hawkeyes improved to 23-15 overall, while SDSU dropped to 21-19 on the season. The Jackrabbits also fell to 5-3 in extra-inning games this season.

The Jackrabbits scored their lone run on a solo home run by Matt Johnson in the top of the fourth. It was the first collegiate home run for the freshman from Ankeny, Iowa.

Iowa tied the game in the home half of the seventh as Nick Day opened the inning by being hit by a pitch and scored on Eric Toole’s triple to center field.

SDSU advanced runners into scoring position in each of the eighth, ninth and 10th innings, but could not come up with a clutch two-out hit in being held to only three hits for the game. Likewise, Iowa squandered a couple chances, grounding into 4-6-3 double plays to end both the ninth and 10th innings. The 10th-inning twin killing came with the winning run at third base.

Day started the winning rally in the 11th by again being hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Toole and advanced to third on a base hit by Jake Mangler. After an intentional walk and popout, Zeutenhorst plated the winning run with a single through the right side against SDSU reliever J.D. Moore.

Jackrabbit starter Adam Bray continued his strong season, extending his streak of allowing one earned run or less to six starts. Bray struck out nine and did not walk a batter, while scattering seven hits.

Moore pitched the final three innings, giving up three hits, walking three and hitting two batters as he fell to 4-3 on the season.

Zeutenhorst and Mangler each went 3-for-6 to lead Iowa’s 13-hit attack.

Tyler Radtke picked up the win in relief, striking out four and walking one in 1 2/3 hitless innings. Four Hawkeye pitchers combined to walk eight batters, but struck out 19, including eight in four innings by reliever Blake Hickman.

Due to inclement weather in the forecast for later in the weekend, the two teams are now scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
