BROOKINGS, SD — South Dakota State scored in six of the eight innings it batted, defeating the University of Winnipeg, 12-2, in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

Freshman centerfielder Zach Coppola went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs to lead the Jackrabbits, who improved to 22-14 overall. Winnipeg, which is in the midst of a transition to full NAIA status, dropped to 6-11 overall.

SDSU put together a two-out rally to crack the scoring column in the bottom of the first. Paul Jacobson started the rally with a double, and after a walk to Jake Ratz, Aaron Machbitz came through with a run-scoring single to center field.

The Jackrabbits made it 3-0 in the second inning as both Coppola and Sam Pack scored on a dropped fly ball.

Winnipeg scored both its runs in the top of the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit. Three consecutive walks loaded the bases before Drew Haight scored on a wild pitch and the second run of the frame crossed home plate after a groundout by Josh Robinson.

SDSU regained control with six runs in the home half of the fourth, highlighted by RBI doubles from Eric Danforth and Jacobson. Four of the Jackrabbits’ 12 hits in the game were two-baggers.

Eight different pitchers worked in the game for the Jackrabbits, with starter Chad Hodges being credited with the victory after he retired all four batters he faced, including one by strikeout. Kenton Welbig was the lone SDSU pitcher to throw more than one complete inning, striking out two batters in two innings. As a staff, SDSU pitchers allowed seven hits and six walks, while striking out nine.

Josh Stolar tallied two of the Wesmen’s seven hits.

The Jackrabbits return to Summit League play Friday afternoon, opening a four-game series at Western Illinois.
