BROOKINGS, SD — Junior Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.) led four Jackrabbits in scoring as the South Dakota State women’s basketball team (9-4) defeated Northern Illinois (4-4) 67-50 Tuesday in front of 1,511 fans at Frost Arena.

The win was SDSU’s 200th Division I win while extending the Jackrabbits’ home winning streak to 10 games and an overall win streak to five games.

Waytashek had game highs of 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists while shooting 5 of 9 from the field and 7 for 7 from the free-throw line. Also in double figures were junior Megan Stuart (Roseville, Minn.) with 14 points off the bench and senior Hannah Strop (New Prague, Minn.) and freshman Kerri Young (Mitchell) with 10 points each.

Amanda Corral’s 14 points and six rebounds led Northern Illinois.

Leading by six points, 51-45 with 7:26 left in the second half, South Dakota State took control of a tight game when it went on a 16-3 run for the win. The Jackrabbits went 6 of 9 from the charity stripe with Stuart scoring six points during the run.

The Jackrabbits lead almost the entire game except when Corral sank a three-pointer and had back-to-back layups over a 2:14 span in the first half to give Northern Illinois a 23-22 lead at 4:28. The Jacks regained the lead, 29-23, with a 7-0 run fueled by three-pointers from Strop and sophomore Chloe Cornemann (Yankton).

SDSU’s bench scored 32 of the Jacks’ 67 points. The Jackrabbits sank 21 of 29 free throws and added eight three-pointers.
