Jacks Drop Final Two At Aces Invite
EVANSVILLE, IN -- The South Dakota State softball team dropped its final two games at the Aces Invitational on Monday, falling 7-6 to Murray State in the opener and 9-3 to host Evansville in the finale.
The Jackrabbits end the day with a 5-12 overall record, while Murray State improved to 11-7 and Evansville to 9-5 on the season.
SDSU led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Racers plated six runs on five hits in the inning to take the lead.
Emily Weber, Alyssa D'Agostino and Kelly Kleppin all got two hits in the game, with D’Agostino adding a pair of RBI. Weber, KayCee Miller, Sammy Bingham and Elyse Eitel all finished with one RBI in the game.
Jennifer Sutton took the loss in the circle for the Jacks.
Bingham doubled and scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second against Evansville to stake the Jacks to a 1-0 lead, but the Purple Aces plated five runs in the third to take a lead they would not relinquish.
The Jacks added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on Vanessa Kellems’ first-career homerun and a D’Agostino RBI single, but the rally came up short.
Kellems went 2 for 4 in the game with a single and her homerun. D’Agostino finished the game 2 for 3 at the plate.
Katie Lang pitched the first three and a third innings before giving way to Ashlyn Bender. Lang took the loss after surrendering six runs on four hits with a trio of walks.
The Jacks look to snap the skid on Tuesday, when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on Kansas in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
