OMAHA, NE — The South Dakota State softball team headed south to Omaha for the second straight weekend, but unlike last week when the Jackrabbits came away with three wins, the Jacks dropped the first two games in a three-game series to Western Illinois, dropping the opener 6-3 and the nightcap 4-3.

The losses drop the Jackrabbits to 14-23 on the season overall, and to 4-10 in The Summit League, while the Fighting Leathernecks improve to 12-19 overall and to 6-12 in the league.

The Jackrabbits cracked the scoreboard first in the opener with a Devon Reick infield single that scored Krista Honken to give them a 1-0 lead after two complete.

Western Illinois came right back with three runs on two hits in the top of the third to take the 3-1 lead, only to see Elyse Eitel tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third with her fifth homerun of the season, a two run shot that scored Sammy Bingham, who opened the inning with a walk.

The Leathernecks broke the tie with a two run homer in the fifth, and then added an insurance run in the sixth to lock up the 6-3 lead.

The Jacks got five hits from five different players in the game, while Kori Seidlitz took the loss in the circle after giving up six runs on 10 hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Western Illinois came out swinging in Game 2, using three doubles and a two-run homerun to stake the Leathernecks to a 4-0 lead after a half of an inning.

Bingham got the Jacks on the board in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI double that scored Reick, but then got picked off at second to end the inning.

Marlee Petersen and Emily Weber both drew bases loaded walks in the bottom of the sixth to get SDSU to within one at 4-3, but the Jacks could not come up the big hit and left the bases loaded.

After the tough first inning, Jackrabbit starter Jennifer Sutton settled down to finish with four runs on eight hits, with three strikeouts and two walks in the loss.

Reick led the SDSU offense with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and a run scored.

The Jackrabbits return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Fargo, N.D., to start a three-game series with North Dakota State at Gate City Field inside the Fargodome. The Jacks and Bison play a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m., followed by a single game on Wednesday at noon.
