MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois pitched their fifth shutout of the year and scored two goals of their own to defeat South Dakota 2-0 in Macomb, Ill.

Katie Condon scored both goals for the Leathernecks (9-2). Condon’s first goal was a header into the left corner of the goal. Kellie Julius assisted on the play, crossing the ball in from the right edge of the box.

Condon’s insurance goal came ten minutes into the second half. Amy Bennett whipped in a nice cross that Condon’s head redirected into the back of the net. The two goals move Condon’s season total to five, tied for second in the Summit League.

Julius’ assist was her fifth on the season, second best in the conference.

The Coyotes (1-8-3) failed to score for a third straight game. Still, head coach Mandy Green was pleased with the continued development of her young team.

“This was the best second-game of the weekend we have had all season,” said Green. “It is frustrating to not put the ball in the back of the net, but our knowledge and ability to read the game is starting to show up. I feel like we are taking steps in the right direction.”

Laura Atkinson got the call in goal for WIU and came up with four saves. The shutout was her third of the season and improved her record to 5-0-0 on the season. As a team WIU has only allowed six goals in 11 games while scoring 33. Both totals lead the Summit League.

Jen Shaefer (Cary, N.C.) made two saves in goal for USD. With the loss Shaefer is 1-3-1 for the season.

South Dakota look to get things going with a home contest Friday. USD faces off with the Omaha Mavericks at 4 p.m.
