SIOUX CITY, IA -- In a battle for third place in the USHL West, the Sioux Falls Stampede turned the lights out on the Sioux City Musketeers in the first period ... literally.

Leading 1-0, a power outage delayed the game for 15 minutes before play resumed and the Stampede lit up Sioux City for six more goals en route to a 7-1 thumping of the Musketeers.

The Herd (33-16-6) scored five times in the second period en route to the victory which moved them into sole possession of third place in the West with 72 points. The Herd have now won four straight games and have five games remaining in the regular season while Sioux City has six.

The Stampede came out with plenty of energy in the first period and were rewarded with a 5-on-3 advantage early in the game. After the first penalty expired, the Herd cashed in at 6:44 when Dakota Joshua sent a pass over into the left circle to Ed McGovern who one-timed the puck into the upper right hand corner of the net to give the Herd a 1-0 edge.

That would be followed by a 15 minute delay after the lights went out at the Tyson Events Center sending both teams back to the locker room.  When play did resume, the Stampede picked up right where they left off and increased their lead at 13:33 when Nolan Gluchowski sent a perfect pass through center ice onto the stick of Joshua who raced in on a breakaway between the circles and wristed a shot past Sioux City netminder Kyle Hayton to give the Herd a 2-0 lead after one period.

Any thoughts of a letdown in the second period were gone just 2:07 in when Christian Horn wristed a shot from the right circle over the shoulder of Hayton and into the upper left hand corner of the net.

Less than a minute later, Eduard Simun found Tony Calderone who wristed a shot in the slot past the stick side of Hayton to make 4-0 Sioux Falls.

Just over a minute later the Herd made it 5-0 when Griffen Molino sent a pass into the left circle for Zeb Knutson who wristed a shot right past Hayton and sent Hayton to the bench early.

The Herd weren’t done in the period however, as C.J. Franklin tallied his first of two on the power play when he tipped in a shot from Garrett Cecere at 9:09. Just over a minute late he converted again with assists from Cecere and Knutson and the Stampede built a 7-0 lead after two periods. The Herd outshot the Musketeers 12 to 8 in the period and two power play goals in the period.

Sioux City would end Art Brey’s shutout bid at 4:17 of the third period when Jake Montgomery took a pass in the slot and one-timed it past Brey. It would be the only goal to get past him on the night as the Herd skated for a 7-1 victory.

The Musketeers outshot the Herd 16 to 3 in the third and 29-27 for the game.

Sioux Falls will take Saturday off before returning to the ice on Sunday to face the Lincoln Stars at 6:05 PM at the Sioux Falls Arena.
