Gary Munsen passed away early Tuesday morning at the age of 72. The longtime boys and girls basketball coach in Mitchell has left a legacy that is tough to match.

For 46 years Munsen was a part of coaching boys basketball in South Dakota. He was the head coach at Mitchell for 39 of those 46 years. During his time as Mitchell boys coach, Munsen led his team to the playoffs 34 times and secured nine state titles.

He also coached Mitchell Kernals Girls Basketball from 1989-2001. He won another his three state titles during those years. Overall, Munsen has won more state championships than any other coach in South Dakota.

Munsen retired following the 2011-2012 season.

His legacy will live on in South Dakota with many of the lives that he impacted.

Munsen was nominated twice for National Coach of the Year. He is also a member of the South Dakota High School Coaches Association, State Boys Basketball Coaches Association, Dakota State University, and South Dakota Sports Hall of Fames.
