O’Gorman’s Matt Cartwright has been announced as the 2016-17 Gatorade Player of the Year.

Cartwright averaged 21 points per game this season and helped the Knights win their first Class AA championship since 2012. This past weekend he finished with 11 points against Huron, 20 vs. Lincoln, and 14 points in the championship game against Aberdeen Central.

Gatorade selects players based on activities on and off the court. Cartwright averaged a 3.77 GPA and helps out with youth activities around the Sioux Falls area.

His head coach Derek Robey told us in a pre-game interview that if Cartwright wasn’t the winner it would surprise him.

“He just carried us all year and if there’s a better player out there, in terms of a better year, I’d like to know who it is. He’s going to go down as having the second best year in O’Gorman history. That’s phenomenal.” – Derek Robey

Cartwright is heading to Augustana to play under Tom Billeter starting next season.
