Last season, Phillip Nelson made his debut for the Minnesota Gophers at quarterback. This year, the sophomore will get the nod again over redshirt freshman Mitch Leidner.

Head Coach Jerry Kill said on Tuesday that Nelson is "certainly our starter," as the Gophers are getting ready for their season opener against UNLV.

Last year, Nelson was average at best. The 6-2, 215 quarterback from Mankato, Minnesota passed for 873 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. Nelson's completed just 49.3% of his passes for a 104.4 quarterback rating in his freshman season.
