Phil Hughes was a bright spot for the Minnesota Twins last season, and now the team is rewarding him with an extended contract.

Today the Twins announced that they have reached an agreement with Phil Hughes to restructure and extend his contract through 2019.

The deal is worth $42 million, the most of any pitcher in Twins history, and is now worth more than the contract the Twins gave Ervin Santana. In terms of a yearly salary, Hughes will earn more than $9 million per year.

Hughes took to Twitter shortly after the announcement to express his excitement.

Hughes went 16-10, with a 3.52ERA, and posted 186 strikeouts in his first season in Minnesota.
