For the first time in the history of professional sports in the United States, an active member of a team has come out as gay.

Veteran NBA Center Jason Collins, in an article he wrote for Sports Illustrated says:

I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport.

But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.

Collins is a 12-year NBA veteran, who split time last season between the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards. He played college ball at Stanford.

So far, the response has been supportive on Twitter and other social media sites:

At the end of the regular season, Collins became a free agent.
