LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Bo Pelini says running back Rex Burkhead's status for this week's game against Arkansas State remains uncertain.

Burkhead missed Saturday's game at UCLA because of a left knee ligament sprain sustained in the opener against Southern Mississippi.

Pelini said Monday that Burkhead continues to be "day-to-day." The coach said the athletic training staff initially thought Burkhead had a "10-to-20-day injury" but the senior's recovery seems to be ahead of schedule.

Burkhead rushed for more than 1,300 yards and was named All-Big Ten last season. His replacement, Ameer Abdullah, ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns in the 36-30 loss to UCLA.
