New South Dakota State Football Stadium Becomes a Reality

With a few strokes of Governor Dennis Daugaard’s pen, South Dakota State’s new football stadium officially became a reality Thursday.

The Governor was in Brookings for a ceremonial signing of South Dakota Senate Bill 15, which authorizes construction of a new $65 million, 19,340 seat facility, which should be completed in time for the 2016 football season.

I asked the Governor about how facilities like this, and the new basketball/volleyball facility at the University of South Dakota, benefit the state as a whole:

I asked SDSU head football coach John Stiegelmeier about the how this facility, and the new indoor practice facility currently under construction, finally completes the Division I transition for the Jackrabbit program:

$27 million of the funding comes from private sources, including $12.5 million from Dana Dykhouse and T. Denny Sanford.  $2 million of the funding comes from institutional money, and the rest of the facility will be paid for by bonds.

Construction will begin at the end of the 2014 football season.
