SIOUX FALLS, SD — Sioux Falls returns home to the Stewart Center for its first-ever NSIC opening weekend. The Cougars will open the homestand against the Concordia St. Paul Golden Bears on Friday night and cap the weekend with a 4 p.m. tilt on Saturday versus the 6-0 Mavericks of Minnesota State, Mankato.

What the Golden Bears Have Done
Concordia-St. Paul enters Friday with an overall record of 3-4 (1-2, NSIC). The Golden Bears have followed a lose one, win won pattern since the first game of the 2012-13 campaign. CSP’s win to date have been against Bethel University, Nebraska-Kearney and Upper Iowa. Sophomore guard Anika Whiting (18.1) is one of the top-5 scorers in the NSIC. Teammate Carissa Wolyniec stands 25th in the league with a scoring average of 11.7 points per contest.

The Cougars and the Golden Bears both faced the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers last month. USF fell at UNK in overtime, 54-45, while CSP crushed the Lopers at home by a 71-51 margin.

The Cougars and the Golden Bears have met just once prior to Friday’s matchup. USF scored an 80-54 victory against Concordia-St. Paul on Nov. 26, 1988.

What the Mavericks Have Done
The Mavericks have opened the 2012-13 season with a 6-0 record (3-0, NSIC), their best start since the 2008-09 campaign, when MSU ran off to a 17-0 start en route to the NCAA Division II National Championship.

The Mavericks have drained 54 treys in their first six games for a league-best average of nine 3’s per contest. MSU connects at a 37.8% clip from beyond the arc to stand fourth in the NSIC. While the Mavericks are dialed in from long range, they have struggled to
defend the three-point line. MSU is currently ranked 14th in three-point defense (.333).

The Mavericks are dropping more dimes than any other team in the NSIC. MSU averages 20.17 assists per game, while USF dishes an average of 11.86 assists per contest to stand 12th in the conference. MSU junior guard Alli Hoefer is the best feeder in the NSIC at 5.7 assists per game.

Junior forward Ali Wilkinson, who was tabbed as the NSIC’s Player of the Week (12/10) after scoring a combined 55 points and pulling down  27 rebounds in the Mavericks’ home wins over Winona State and Upper Iowa. She connected from the floor at a 61% clip and also tallied seven assists and seven steals.

Saturday is the first-ever matchup between Sioux Falls and Minnesota State, Mankato.

Pam Gohl, USF’s Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Senior Woman Administrator most recently served as the head women’s basketball coach at Minnesota State, Mankato. In 2008-09, MSU posted a 32-2 mark and won its first NCAA Championship in school history. Gohl was named NSIC Coach of the Year and the 2009 Molten/Women’s Division II Bulletin Coach of the Year.
