Off the Tee: Sergio Garcia Finally Gets a Major, Wins Masters

Subscribe to KSOO-FM / ESPN 99.1 on

It’s getting to be commonplace these days – first-time winners in golf’s major tournaments. It’s now been six first-time winners in the last six major tournaments. But, Sergio Garcia’s breakthrough at 2017 Masters took the whole ‘first-timers’ thing to a new level.

The playoff victory over Justin Rose, snapped an 18-year majors drought for Garcia, a player who has come close a number of times, but always seemed to find a way to fold when the pressure was on in a big tournament.

Not anymore.

In this edition of ‘Off The Tee’, I talk with Joel Harrington, from 4 Deep Golf blog, about Sergio’s emotional day, regrouping after blowing a front nine lead at Augusta, Sunday (April 9), only to outlast Rose on the 73rd hole.

We also discuss:

  • Dustin Johnson bizarre withdrawal from the tournament after falling sown a flight of stairs
  • Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth shooting a combined seven-over-par n the final round
  • Matt Kuchar’s -5 round Sunday, including a hole-in-one on 16th
  • Rory McIlroy’s T-7th finish
  • Americans Kevin Chappell and Russell Henley playing well
  • Phil Mickelson with nine bogeys and two double bogeys on the front nine in four rounds

Here’s my conversation with Joel:
