Report: Oakland to Leave Summit League for Horizon League

Summit League TournamentIf reports out of the Detroit area are true, the Summit League will be losing two schools this off-season.  Kansas City has already announced plans to join the Western Athletic Conference next year, and now the Detroit Free Press is reporting that Oakland will officially announce tomorrow that they are heading for the Horizon League.

In a story on the newspaper’s website, The Free Press says the University’s athletic department is holding a press conference Tuesday afternoon, following a meeting of the Board of Trustees, to announce the conference switch.

The Horizon already has former Summit member Valparaiso, after they made the jump in 2006.  The remaining Horizon schools are in Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois, making considerably shorter trips for the Golden Grizzlies, who had to travel to North and South Dakota, Nebraska, and Missouri in the Summit.  Those travel challenges would be even greater in 2014, as Denver replaces Kansas City in the league.

Nationally, the Horizon fared better on the court this past season, 12th in RPI, compared to 19th for the Summit.

If the move is made, the Summit League would stand at eight schools (SDSU, USD, UNO, NDSU, Western Illinois, Fort Wayne, IUPUI, and Denver) for next season.
