Seekamp, Contreras Lead USD Past Cal State-Fullerton
FULLERTON, CA — Nicole Seekamp had 18 points and Raeshel Contreras scored 17 points in her Coyote debut as the South Dakota women’s basketball team topped Cal State Fullerton 66-57 inside Titan Gym on Friday night.
South Dakota (1-0) never trailed in the game and led by as many as 19 in the first half (26-7). As a team, South Dakota outrebounded the Titans (0-1) 44-31 with Seekamp and Tia Hemiller grabbing seven rebounds each.
Contreras was 6-of-8 shooting coming off the bench while Seekamp shot 6-of-14 and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Polly Harrington also reached double-digit points, scoring nine of her 11 points in the second half.
The Titans were led by Kathleen Iwuoha’s 14 points and seven rebounds while Chante Miles added 12 points.
USD shot 46 percent (22-48) from the field and held Cal State Fullerton to 38 percent shooting (23-60). South Dakota also made as many free throws (17-25) as the Titans shot in the game (9-17).
The Titans were able to cut a 37-22 USD halftime lead down to eight points five times in the second half, but couldn’t get any closer until a Miles jumpshot cut the lead to seven (64-57) with two seconds left in the game. Despite causing 25 USD turnovers, the Titans only held a 17-13 advantage in points off turnovers.
South Dakota will play at UC Irvine on Sunday at 4 p.m.
