A dog that charged a Sioux Falls police officer was shot and killed Wednesday as the officer was checking out a domestic assault report.

The officer was at an address on South Second Avenue just after 3pm and was talking to the residents when the dog charged him from inside.

The officer tried to close a gate to keep the dog away, but police say he had to shoot it to keep from attacking.

The dog died at a veterinarian's office. The officer had minor injuries.
