Sioux Falls Washington Hosts Sioux Falls Roosevelt in Late Season City Clash
As we inch closer to the end of the regular season in Class AA basketball, a sense of urgency can be found. Teams are fighting to keep their seeds for the district tournaments.
Tonight will be no different. The two top teams from District 1 and District 2 will face off tonight. Sioux Falls Roosevelt (14-3) will have their second meeting this season with Sioux Falls Washington (11-7). It was the Rough Riders pulling out a 64-55 victory in the first contest back on January 23rd.
Colton Kooima led Roosevelt with 22 points, while Chris Phillips added 17. Where the Riders struggled was containing Brett Stanley who scored a game-high 32 for the Warriors. Outside of Stanley, there wasn’t much offensive production. Deng Geu was held to just seven total points, and Austin Hines had just five.
Since the loss to Roosevelt, Washington is 5-2 in their last seven. Four of the seven games went into overtime (3-1 in OT). The Warriors picked up victories over Brandon Valley, Lincoln, Sioux Valley, Brookings, and RC Central. Their two losses were to quality teams being Marshall, MN, and RC Stevens.
Roosevelt enters tonight’s game on a three game winning streak. In that run, they have defeated Brandon Valley, O’Gorman, and Yankton. Their last loss was back on February 7th, a 53-46 decision to Marshall MN.
District 1 is all but wrapped up for the Rough Riders. They lead the division by six games, and have a four point lead in terms of seed points over O’Gorman. With three games left, Roosevelt is in full control.
District 2 is quite opposite. Washington currently leads the district while having one win less than Yankton (thanks to seed points). Brandon Valley is also right behind Washington, as they are fighting for the top seed in District 2. At stake tonight? Washington can earn 50 seed points for a win, 39 for a loss. This is their last chance at that many points as they will take on O’Gorman (8-11) where they can only earn 44 for a win.
Opening tip from Washington is scheduled for 7:00. @Jerrysworld991 will have the call.
