Over the last seven seasons, the University of South Dakota football team has built an impressive resume, playing well-known FBS schools like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Kansas State, and Oregon. The Coyotes even pulled off a big upset in one of those match-ups, knocking off the Golden Gophers in 2010.

But USD now has a game on an upcoming schedule that takes things to the next level.

The Coyotes will play at Oklahoma in the 2019 season. The non-conference games is scheduled for September 7, 2019. It will be the first meeting between the two programs.

The Sooners have seven national championships (most recently after the 2000 season) and five Heisman Trophy winners to their credit.

Bob Stoops has been OU’s head coach for the past 18 seasons. During that time his teams have won ten Big 12 Conference titles and nine bowl games.

In 2016, Oklahoma finished in the top five in the national polls after going 11-2, winning the Big 12 title, and beating Auburn in the Sugar Bowl.

The Sooners play their home games in Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, in Norman. The venue has hosted OU football since 1923 and has been renovated four times and had its seating capacity expanded eight times since. Currently it holds 86,112, but did squeeze in 87,939 for a game against Ohio State during the 2016 season.

The 2019 game in Norman will be the second in a four-year series of games for USD against Big 12 Conference opponents. The Coyotes will also face Kansas State in 2018, Iowa State in 2020, and Kansas in 2021.

In 2016, USD finished 4-7 in Bob Nielson’s first year as head coach. The Coyotes began the year 4-3 before dropping their final four games (all four losses by a touchdown or less).

South Dakota opens the 2017 season with road games at Drake (September 2) and Bowling Green (September 9), before the home opener against North Dakota (September 16).
