SIOUX FALLS - Several Sioux Falls elementary schools are encouraging students to walk or run more in an effort to promote a healthier and more active lifestyle.

Eugene Field Elementary School is one of the schools. Principal Ann Davis says that when people are physically active, they learn better.

Renberg Elementary also has a walking program. Gym teachers hand out chains to each student, and when students reach various mileage benchmarks, they earn foot-shaped charms.

Renberg Principal Patricia Pannell tells the Argus Leader that 106 out of the school's 190 students have earned at least one charm.

Cleveland Elementary has a before-school running club and has maps in the gym charting the students' and staffs' progress toward walking the equivalent of the length of the United States.
