Starting today bow hunters can start setting up their portable tree stands for the upcoming deer season.

The name and address or the year and current big game tag number of the owner or user must be on the stand and legible from the ground. Tree stands may be stabilized with one screw-in T.

Permanent tree stands and climbing devices are prohibited on lands owned, leased or controlled by the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks as well as the Fort Meade Recreation Area. Portable tree stands and climbing devices that do not use nails, wire or bolts for attachment are allowed from August 25 through February 15, 2016.

The South Dakota archery deer season runs from September 25 through January 15, 2016.

If you are hunting from an elevated blind be safe. South Dakota hunters are injured from tree stand falls. That is the number one cause injuries suffered by deer hunters in the United States.
