URBANDALE, IA -- Down 1-0 in the third period, the Sioux Falls Stampede rallied for two goals and topped the Des Moines Buccaneers 2-1 Saturday night in Urbandale, Iowa. Matt Van Voorhis and Dennis Kravchenko scored third period goals while Jan Obernesser earned his first career win in goal with 31 saves. It was the Herd’s second straight win and first on the road. The Herd have now won 7 of their last 8 games against Des Moines dating back to last season.

After a scoreless first period, the Bucs grabbed the first goal of the game 8:19 into the second period on a goal from Tanner Karty. Karty took a pass from Trent Samuels-Thomas off a face-off and wristed a shot under the stick side of Stampede netminder Jan Obernesser to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead. Both teams would exchange scoring chances, but neither would score before the end of the period. The Herd nearly tied the game late in the period with a flurry of shots, but Des Moines goaltender Billy Christopoulos shut the door, keeping the Herd off the board. Sioux Falls did draw a penalty late though, giving them 1:43 of powerplay time to start the third.

The Herd did not convert on the powerplay to start the period, but got another chance at 8:22 and cashed in. Sam Rothstein fed Matt Van Voorhis a pass through the neutral zone and Van Voorhis raced over the Des Moines line and blasted a shot into the upper left hand corner of the net to make it a 1-1 game. The score remained tied until 17:11 of the period when Sioux Falls took their first lead of the night on a goal from Dennis Kravchenko. Ryan Siiro and Todd Skirving worked the puck from the left corner into the high slot for Kravchenko who slapped a shot under the right pad of Christopoulos to give Sioux Falls a 2-1 lead. The Bucs would pull their goalie late, but Obernesser and the defense shut the door to preserve the 2-1 victory.

Sioux Falls went 1-for-5 on the powerplay while Des Moines was 0-for-4. The Bucs outshot the Stampede 32-31 on the evening and have now gone winless in 17 straight games, dating back to last season.

The Herd return to action next Friday when they host the Indiana Ice at 7:05 PM.
