Sump Pump Inspections Underway in Sioux Falls
Here come the sump pump police. Sioux Falls city officials say the annual "sump pump inspection program" is underway.
The Public Works Department says inspections will be done between 8am and 7pm in areas that seem to have higher-than-normal sanitary sewer flows.
This is a serious thing, because sump pump discharges into the sanitary sewer have to treated as if the water were, well, sewage. And too much water into the sanitary sewer can cause sewage backups into your neighbor's basement or yours.
It's the same reason the City tells you during times of snow melt or heavy rain to make sure your sump pump is pumping the water outside and not into a floor drain.
In the neighborhoods that are checked, inspectors will go door-to-door to see how the pumps are set up, and violators could be cited and fined.
