One of the best hitters of all time, has passed away.

At the age of 54, Tony Gwynn has died.

In 2002, the Hall of Famer took over at his alma matter, San Diego State University as their baseball coach.  He had received a one year extension on June 11th, as he was still recovering from cancer treatment while on medical leave.

Gwynn had a career .338 batting average, won eight National League batting titles, and played in the franchise's only two World Series.
