The United States AmeriCup Men’s Basketball team got off to a flying start in their first outing and walloped Panama 97-56 on Monday evening.

Propelled by a 27-10 first quarter, the Americans steadily built their advantage through the rest of the contest scoring at least 21 points in each quarter. Conversely, Panama was held to 18 or less in each frame.

Darrun Hilliard and Jonathan Holmes each scored 17 points with Reggie Williams adding 13 points. Skyforce guard Larry Drew II scored 7 points and dished out 7 assists and beat the shot clock with a three pointer late in the third quarter.

The U.S. team will play their second game of Group C play against host Uruguay Tuesday (August 29). In a quote from the USA Basketball website, Williams knows their next contest will be much harder as both teams will come into the contest undefeated.

“I think it’s going to take everything, honestly. Us, as a team, being on the same page offensively and defensively. They have home court advantage. Obviously, we are here in their city in their country, and they will have the support of their fans and everyone behind them. It’s going to be a tough game, but we just have to stay focused and stay together and do what we do.”

In a more defensive battle, Uruguay topped the Dominican Republic 66-57. The game was tied at halftime before the hosts pulled away in the fourth quarter.
