University of Minnesota: Keep Redskins Name Out of Stadium
MINNEAPOLIS — A letter written by the University of Minnesota’s president says the school is working with the Minnesota Vikings to keep the Washington Redskins name from being used in promotional and game day materials at the university’s stadium.
The school is hosting all of the Vikings home games while a new stadium for the NFL team is being built. Minnesota and Washington will play at TCF Bank Stadium Nov. 2.
In a letter to Minnesota U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, university President Eric Kaler calls the Redskins name offensive and says he’ll work with the Vikings to eliminate the use of the team name on game day. It’s not clear to what extent the Vikings are participating in the effort.
The Star Tribune says Kaler was responding to a letter McCollum wrote to Vikings owner Zygi Wilf urging him to condemn the Redskins name.
