SIOUX FALLS, SD — Augustana split a doubleheader with Upper Iowa with a pair of close games on Thursday afternoon. The Vikings fell 3-1 in game one before taking the second leg, 4-3.  Augustana now holds a 29-10 overall record, 16-6 in NSIC competition, and the Peacocks are 24-14, 11-7 in the NSIC.

A two-run home run by Hailley Haning in the first inning gave Upper Iowa a lead that they would not relinquish, winning 3-1.  The Vikings only mustered four hits, but stayed in the game by stranding 11 UIU baserunners.

Jenelle Trautmann was saddled with just her sixth loss of the year while Brooke Redmond gave up one unearned run in seven innings of work to improve her record to 12-6.

Haning took a 2-1 pitch down the right field line, just clearing the fence, to knock in a pair of runs with her second home run of the season.  The Vikings only tallied two hits over the first four innings, but broke through in the bottom of the fifth.

Jenny Brown knocked in Chelsi Winskowski with a two-out single to left field for Augustana’s first run.  Winskowski led off the inning by drawing a four-pitch walk and was advanced to second when Carly Peterson reached on catcher’s interference and scored on Brown’s second hit of the game.

The Peacocks tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Bailee Haberman singled in Haning who led off the inning with a single.  In the bottom half, Redmond forced two groundouts and a flyout to give Upper Iowa a 3-1 win in game one.

Jenelle Trautmann knocked in three runs and Carly tallied her fifth straight win as Augustana downed Upper Iowa 4-3 to split the doubleheader.  Pickett improves her record to 6-3 on the season and Jacqueline Flood was handed her fourth loss of the year.

Once again, the Peacocks struck first by scoring two runs in the opening stanza, but the Vikings avoided a bigger hole by stranding two runners on second and third.

Augustana was quick to respond, scoring two runs of their own in the bottom half.  Brown singled and Lindsay Spanton doubled, placing her and Brown in scoring position.  Trautmann logged her only hit of game two with a double to right center, but it was crucial as she evened the score at 2-2 after one inning of play.

Pickett replaced Trautmann in the circle and stymied the Peacock batters over the next six innings, giving up just three hits while striking out four.

Augustana took its first lead of the day in the fourth inning when Erin Kempf reached third base safely after the UIU third baseman couldn’t handle a throw from the pitcher and was plated on Peterson’s groundout to the shortstop.

The Vikings scored one more run the following inning when Trautmann grounded out the shortstop to score Brown and put Augustana up 4-2.  Brown singled through the left side to open the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Spanton moved her one base closer with a ground ball to short.

Upper Iowa narrowed the game to 4-3 by scoring one run in the sixth on a Haberman double.  In the top of the seventh, Pickett was faced with runners on second and no outs, but escaped without any damage to give the Vikings the win.

Pickett walked the leadoff batter and Whitney Williams reached first base on a fielder’s choice when Emily Heinz’s throw to second hit the runner and allowed her to get to third.  Williams stole second to put more pressure on the freshman southpaw.

Pickett then pitched out of the jam forcing a lineout to first, striking out the next batter and was aided by a bit of luck in the final out.  Haning roped a ball right back at Pickett, but the Pickett’s leg deflected the ball to Trautmann, who tagged out Haning to end the game.

The Vikings remain at home to close out the season with noon twinbills against U-Mary and Minot State on Saturday and Sunday.
