Vikings Stunned In Triple-Overtime At Minot State
Both teams are now 1-1 on the season, as Minot State picked up the win in the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Saturday’s game marked the 10th time Augustana has played in overtime in school history. The Vikings are now 4-6 all-time in overtime games, and have lost two straight overtime games.
The Vikings had plenty of opportunities to secure the victory, as Lucas Wainman missed a 50-yard field goal with 6:22 left in the fourth quarter. Wainman had a chance to put Augustana on the board in the first overtime session and missed a 38-yard field goal wide right giving Minot State a chance for the win.
Minot State kicker Brian Gutierrez then missed a 34-yard field goal attempt to send it to a second overtime.
Minot State’s Peters caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Zac Cunha in the Beavers’ second overtime possession, forcing the Vikings into a must-score possession.
Trey Heid completed a 16-yard pass to Darren Niklason on the first play of the Vikings’ second overtime possession and later rushed for a nine-yard touchdown allowing the Vikings to square things up at 17.
Brandon Mohr led Augustana defensively with a career-high 12 tackles, including three solo stops. Mohr recorded two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. The Viking defense kept Augustana alive all night, recording two interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
The five turnovers is the most by Augustana’s defense since the Vikings recorded six turnovers (5 interceptions, one fumble recovery) against Winona State on Oct. 15, 2011.
Augustana posted five sacks in the win, the most since Augustana had five against Upper Iowa on Oct. 18, 2008.
Brown and Thomas Vanasek recorded the interceptions for Augustana. Vanasek also added 11 tackles and a forced fumble. Joel Slinden posted five tackles, 2.0 for a loss and a sack.
The Vikings took the ball first in the third overtime and moved to the Minot State seven yard-line after a 14-yard completion from Heid to Noah Huisman. Heid then completed a six-yard pass to Matt Gerry to set Augustana up with third and goal at the one-yard line.
Heid was then stuffed on consecutive attempts and the Vikings would turn the ball over on downs in the third overtime. On third and from the 22-yard line, Cunha threw a fade into the right corner of the end zone where Augustana cornerback Justin Brown tipped the ball and Minot State’s Peters was waiting for it in the end zone to give the Beavers a 23-17 win.
Augustana was held to just 249 yards of total offense in the game, including 93 rushing yards and 156 passing yards. Heid led the Vikings on the ground with 46 yards on 19 attempts and a touchdown. CJ Ham rushed for 29 yards while Dajon Newell was held to just 18 yards on 20 attempts.

After a scoreless third quarter, Augustana tied the game at 10 after a Niklason hauled in a three-yard touchdown pass from Heid with 11:33 to play in the game.
That is where the scored would stay before the two teams headed into the overtime sessions.
