Vikings Sweep Wayne State, Set Single Season Record For Wins
SIOUX FALLS, SD — Augustana came away with a series sweep over Wayne State College winning the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader 2-1, before earning a 10-0 victory over the Wildcats (26-18, 18-12 NSIC) in game two.
Augustana celebrated the dedication and Grand Opening of Karras Park, Home of Ronken Field in a big way, setting a school record for wins in a season. With the sweep, Augustana improves to 36-16 overall, and 21-7 in the NSIC.
The Vikings have now won 20-plus games in the NSIC in four straight seasons.
After four innings of scoreless baseball, the Vikings got on the board first taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Wayne State’s Michael Frericks held Augustana hitless through the first four innings before Zach Dibble singled to left field to move Kye Winter to third base. Winter led off the inning with a walk and was quick to make his way to third on Dibble’s single, forcing a throw, allowing Dibble to move up to second.
Jake Petersen then singled to right field to drive in Winter and Dibble and give Augustana a 2-0 lead.
Wayne State got on the board in the top of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Kevin Andersen to make it a 2-1 game.
Grant Larson earned the complete game victory for Augustana on the mound, improving to 5-4 on the season. Larson allowed just two hits, two walks, while striking out 10 batters in the victory. His double-digit strikeout effort marks the second this season.
Wayne State starter Michael Frericks held Augustana without a hit through four innings before allowing just two hits and two runs in the contest. Frericks struck out 10 batters and walked just two as he lost for just the second time this season.
The Vikings jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap and never looked back on its way to a win over the Wildcats.
Augustana started off the first inning with back-to-back singles by Petersen and Marcus O’Neill before Tony Viger walked to load the bases. After David Borchardt struck out, Nate Hewes cleared the bases with a double down the left field line to give Augustana a 3-0 lead with one out in the first. Hewes finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI.
Peterseon was 3-for-5 at the plate while O’Neill finished 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Kye Winter followed with a double to right center to score Hewes and make it a 4-0 game and Ben Ludwigson cracked the Vikings’ third double of the inning with two outs to score Winter, pushing the lead to 5-0.
From that point on both pitching staffs took over as Augustana’s Sam Gotham earned his sixth win of the season going five strong innings, giving up just two hits while striking out six batters. The Vikings chased WSC’s Curtis Bussard from the mound after the first and Taylor MacDonell threw 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits.
Matt Musser and Michael Willman both pitched 1.1 innings of relief for Augustana, both striking out two and walking one. Cole Jenkins pitched a third of an inning and got his batter to ground out to end the eighth inning.
The Vikings went on to score five runs on four hits to win by the 10-run-rule in the bottom of the eighth inning. Brian Duxbury pushed in the first two runs with a two-RBI triple to center field and came in to score on an RBI single by Alex Fink, who pinch-hit for Ludwigson.
O’Neill then sent a double to right field with runners on second and third to end the game at 10-0.
Next up for the Vikings is the NSIC Tournament which will be held in St. Cloud, Minn. beginning on Wednesday. The tournament bracket will be released on Sunday night.
