SIOUX FALLS, SD — A sweet start turned sour for Augustana as Upper Iowa was able to erase a 17-point first-half deficit on their way to winning 84-79 on Saturday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate action.  The Vikings fell to 13-11 (10-8 NSIC) with their third-straight loss.  The Peacocks climbed back to .500 with the win (12-12, 10-8 NSIC).

Casey Schilling recorded his seventh double-double of the year with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Daniel Jansen snapped a three-game streak of being held to under 10 points with a 20-point effort in the loss.

Jansen and Schilling combined to go 16 for 23 (69.5 percent) on the evening, part of an Augustana offense that finished the night shooting 47.5 percent (29 of 61).

Josh Weeber’s 22 points led Upper Iowa, highlighted with six made 3-pointers.  Joey Woods, going scoreless in the first half, erupted in final 20 minutes, scoring all 21 of his points on 6-of-8 shooting in the second half.

The Vikings domainance of the paint (44 points in the paint) and glass (plus-20 rebounding margin) couldn’t overcome a season-high 20 turnovers caused by the Peacocks pressure on the defensive end.  Augustana was only able to force six Upper Iowa turnovers on the flip side.

Augustana came out firing on all cylinders to start the game, jumping out to a 27-10 lead, its biggest of the half, after a Schilling layup at the 9:21 mark in the first half.

Schilling had it going on early, scoring seven of the Vikings’ first nine points.  The Ellsworth, Minn. native didn’t miss in the first half, finishing with 15 points on a perfect six-of-six shooting.  Schilling also proved to be a force on the boards, grabbing six rebounds in the half.

Upper Iowa, refusing to go away, began its long trek back into this game by outscoring the Vikings 29-16 over the final 9:01 to enter halftime trailing by just three after Luke Lenhart drained a 35-footer at the buzzer to put the Peacocks down just four at 43-39.

Jansen finished his first half with 13 points and four rebounds.

Augustana’s 55.2 percent shooting in the first half helped it overcome some sloppy ball handling by the normally sure-handed Vikings.  The Vikings had 13 turnovers in the first half.

Augustana dominated control of the boards in the first half, outrebounding Upper Iowa 24-10 in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Peacock’s Weeber displayed his shooting touch, scoring 14 points, going four of six from beyond the arc.

The second half started with Weeber continuing his red-hot touch, draining two early threes that cut the Viking lead to two at 47-45 with 18:06 remaining.

Coming out of the first media timeout of the second half, the Vikings seemed to set things right after breaking Upper Iowa’s press, resulting in a three-point play on an Isaac Jorgensen layup and made free throw.

Augustana led 65-58 midway through the second half at the media timeout when its size appeared to finally be wearing down the Peacocks on the inside.

A Jansen score in the post after being fouled and made free throw pushed the Vikings lead to 10 at 70-60 with 8:33 remaining.

Upper Iowa continued to fight its way back into the game, using an 8-0 run get within two at 70-68 after two made free throws by David Smith at the 5:29 mark.

The Peacocks big moment came when they got their first lead of the contest with 1:45 remaining after Woods drew the foul while making a layup. Woods would make the free throw and put UIU up three at 78-75.

Augustana would find itself in trouble after a controversial blocking call was made on Adam Beyer.  Woods stepped to the line and hit one of two, giving Upper Iowa a two-point lead with 52 seconds remaining.

The Vikings turned the ball over the next time up the court, failing to get a shot off.

Woods would make two more free throws, making it a two-possession game at 81-77 with 35 seconds left.

Augustana would fail to get a good look and shot, and was forced to foul to extend the game, resulting in an 84-79 Peacock win.

Augustana closes out the four-game home stand with two more home games at the Elmen Center.  On Friday, the Vikings face Minnesota State Moorhead at 8 p.m.  Augustana wraps up the home stand against Northern State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
