The definition of romance, as defined by Webster’s Dictionary, is making someone think of love; thinking about love and doing and saying things to show that you love someone.

There’s an understanding that the longer you’re in a relationship with someone, it’s easy to forget about romance or think that the romance is dead in your relationship. That’s all the more reason to keep up with it.

Whether you’ve just begun a relationship or you’ve been together with someone for decades, there are plenty of reasons and ways to be romantic.

Anyone and everyone can benefit from a little romantic gesture. In the beginning of a relationship, almost everyone has those little rose-tinted glasses on. What we call love at the start of a relationship is an insane chemical reaction, bonding us to that person.

As the relationship continues, we get used to each other and stop feeling and acting the way we did in the beginning. Saying, “I love you” can begin to sound monotonous or tedious.

You know what they say: actions speak louder than words. Romantic gestures large or small let them know you care; it increases trust, initiates reciprocation, and shows selflessness.

Touching your partner can be a wonderful way to show your love. There are studies that have shown that physical contact can decrease stress and can also decrease high blood pressure and cortisol, which increases your immune system. That also helps prevent heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Any physical contact can help release a bonding hormone called oxytocin. This pushes us to build trust and intimacy with your partner. So try it out! Hold their hand, touch their thigh, or hug them for a moment or two longer than usual. Both of you will appreciate it.

Research has shown that in order to keep the feeling of falling in love all over again, you have to both participate in something novel and challenging.

There are plenty of ways to show you love someone. From cuddling and hand-holding, to love letters, gifts, surprise bubble baths, to adrenaline inducing activities like organizing a plane ride and riding a rollercoaster together.

Always keep in mind who your partner is so you don’t end up doing something she hates, which can make it seem like you don’t care. Surprise her when she wouldn’t expect it or when she’s having a bad day.

Always try to remember your anniversary or her birthday. She knows that some people have a difficult time remembering these kinds of things, so if you remember it will make her feel important and appreciated.

Try to not think of being romantic as a chore or another job to do, but rather an investment in your relationship. To show her you love her, and to show her you appreciate her. To show her that you are in this forever. That’s an awfully long time to be just ok with one another.
