Augustana Men and Women Advance to NCAA Division II Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The Augustana men's and women's basketball teams are headed to the NCAA DIvision II tournament.
The NCAA announced the tournament fields on Sunday. The Viking women are the No. 6 seed in the Central Region and will take on third seed Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday in Topeka, Kan. Augustana earned an automatic bid by defeating Minnesota State-Mankato 81-73 Saturday in the championship game of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament.
The Central Region is made up of teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, Great American Conference and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Minnesota State is the third team from the NSIC to make the tournament. The Mavericks are the No. 4 seed and will face GAC member Arkansas Tech.
Washburn will host the Central Region tournament as the top seed, and faces No. 8 seed and MIAA tournament champion Emporia State.
Should the Vikings win, they will face the winner between No. 2 seed Central Missouri and No. 7 seed Southwestern Oklahoma State on Sunday.
The Augustana men have also advanced to the Central Region tournament. The Vikings are the third seed and face NSIC foe and No. 6 seed Upper Iowa on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
Augustana finished third in the NSIC and reached the semifinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament before losing to Minnesota State-Mankato 87-66.
This will be the second straight NCAA Tournament appearance for the Vikings and the 11th in school history. Augustana is 8-12 all-time in NCAA postseason competition.
Minnesota State is the No. 1 seed and will host the men's Central Region tournament March 16-19 at the Taylor Center.
Tickets for the men's regional are $15 for reserved seats, $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens, children (ages 5-17) and college students with valid student IDs. Tickets can be purchased online at msumavericktickets.com beginning Monday, at 12:00 p.m. Tickets will not be mailed but fans have the option of printing their own tickets online or they will be available for pick-up at the MSU Athletics Office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Tickets that are not picked up can be claimed at Taylor Center Will Call on the day of the game. Online ticket availability closes at 9:00 p.m., the day prior to each session.
